FOURTEEN

The next morning, since they were free until late afternoon, they took Alec’s suggestion to walk down the sloped driveway from the villa to Kalya. The little town had a bustling tourist trade, especially on a weekend, and Lacey and Sam merged with the stream of visitors that flowed through the business district.

The small commercial area of Kalya was a curious mix of the old and the new, of necessities and tourist kitsch. A fruit vendor offered lemons and limes, figs and dates, but next to him was a man selling t-shirts depicting Qumran or the Dead Sea. Some shirts had tasteful photographic images of the ruins or the caves, while others took a more humorous tack. One said, “I’m so old, when I was born the Dead Sea was only sick.” Another touted “Dead Sea Squirrels,” with a photo of the inquisitive little mammals. Lacey glanced down an alley way and saw a donkey tied up outside one home, and later a man led a camel down the street.

I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore, she thought dryly.

She perused the offered wares with thoughts of the kids; they’d promised to get something for Daniel and Kenzie. She noticed a bright turquoise scarf with silver edging; that would look fabulous with Kenzie’s dark coloring. Daniel might be a little harder to buy for.

Afterward, they strolled down to Kalya Beach, where most visitors took their first dip in the waters of the Dead Sea. It was just slightly surreal to see so many people floating atop the water, or to see some trying valiantly—and failing—to dive deep into the salty, buoyant water. Still others sat on the beach and covered themselves with the dark, muddy sand that was supposed to heal. It was an odd combination of holiday and pilgrimage, of light entertainment and deadly seriousness.

They made their way back through the stalls of the street vendors at lunch time and sampled kebobs right off the grill and falafel in pita bread. For dessert they tried malabi, the creamy pudding offered in small cups and topped with thick syrup and chopped pistachios. Not sure when they might have time again for shopping, Lacey bought a spa pack of Dead Sea mud for her mother, a silly t-shirt for her father, and the scarf for Kenzie. Since they were so close to Petra, the site of the climactic scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Sam found an Indiana Jones hat for Daniel, and they hiked back up the hill to the villa, walking considerably more slowly than when they’d come down.

They were surprised to see the limo parked in front of the villa, and Alistair unloading two small suitcases from the car’s huge trunk. Lacey glanced over at Sam.

“Did Alec say anything about having other guests?” she asked.

“Not that I heard,” Sam said.

They said hello to Alistair and followed him inside. The chauffeur carried his burdens past their own wing to another part of the villa, and Sam and Lacey veered off to their suite to drop off their purchases.
